Portrait of an Officer of a Scottish Highland Regiment, circa late 1790s

Watercolour on ivory, oval, 6.3 x 4.8 cm.
Painted late 1790s

The younger brother of Adam Buck, he spent his career in Cork where he established himself as the leading miniaturist in the city. He was adept at capturing the likenesses of officers as they embarked at the busy port for service in France and the Peninsular War. This portrait is typical of his work. The hairstyle and cut of the sitter’s coat suggest a date in the 1790s.
