Oisín Roche is an Irish painter whose practice encompasses portraiture, interiors and street scenes, with a particular interest in the changing character of contemporary Ireland. His work combines close observation with a strong sense of draughtsmanship, bringing together the traditions of European painting with subjects drawn from everyday life. Roche’s approach to painting has its roots in the tradition of William Orpen, whose work he studied closely at the National Gallery of Ireland, alongside that of the Old Dutch Masters, particularly Vermeer and Metsu. These influences can be seen in his attention to light, atmosphere, composition and the quiet observation of his subjects. Strong drawing has remained fundamental to his practice, providing the foundation for both his painting and his work in etching and print-making. Roche has exhibited extensively throughout his career, including two solo exhibitions with Adams Auctioneers in Dublin, in 2010 and 2013. In 2018, his portrait of John Waters was selected as the sole Irish entry for the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London, placing his work within an important international tradition of contemporary portraiture. His work is held in the National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland, to which he was elected in 2018. His distinctions include the Don Caracciolo Gold Medal for Painting from the Royal Hibernian Academy, awarded in 1996 for The Refugees, and the Ireland–US Council Award for Outstanding Portraiture in 2014. Across his work, Roche remains committed to the enduring possibilities of observational painting. His portraits, interiors and scenes of contemporary Ireland are grounded in drawing and direct engagement with his subjects, while reflecting a wider dialogue with the history and traditions of European painting.
