Born in Dublin in 1941, Niccolo d’Ardia Caracciolo was the only son of Ferdinando Caracciolo, Prince of Cursi and Mary Purcell-Fitzgerald. On the recommendation of Italian artist Pietro Annigoni (1910-1988), Caracciolo studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze under Nerina Simi (1890-1987), a renowned teacher of fine arts. Although based in Florence throughout his working life, Caracciolo frequently travelled back and forth to Ireland, producing landscapes, portraits, and much celebrated still-lifes. He later became a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1984. At the age of just 48, Caracciolo died in a road accident near Siena, Italy, and was later buried in Calvary Cemetery, Bunclody.
