‘Bouquet of Anemones’
Oil on Wood, 48 x 39cm
Signed
Sleator initially trained in Belfast before enrolling at the Metropolitan School of Art in 1909 where he was taught by William Orpen. He continued his training at the Slade in London, followed by Paris. He became one of Orpen’s favoured pupils and worked closely with him in England. It was upon his recommendation that Winston Churchill en- gaged his services as a private art tutor, and he stayed with him when living near Godalming in Surrey. He also painted Lady Gwendoline Churchill.
A distinguished portrait painter, Sleator was equally renowned for his work in still life. Indeed, his earliest successes as a student were in the still life genre, earning him Gold and Silver medals under the South Kensington system. Here he signals his close affinity with Orpen with the prominent inclusion of the Regency convex mirror; a device synonymous with his mentor’s oeuvre. Sleator succeeded Dermod O’Brien as President of the RHA in 1945.
