James Francis Danby was the eldest son and pupil of Dublin-born Francis Danby, A.R.A. (1793-1861). James Francis exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin from 1849 to 1871, and at the Royal Academy, London from 1842 to 1876, while also regularly exhibiting at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. ‘Excelling in sunset effects, and [...] particularly successful in his coast scenes’ (Strickland), James Fran- cis’s coastal views, stylistically influenced by the work of the artist’s father, were largely inspired by sunrises and sunsets witnessed during his travels to France, Italy and Switzerland.
