The eldest son and pupil of Francis Danby, James Francis Danby exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1849 to 1871, as well as at the British Institution, the Royal Hibernian Academy, and the Society of British Artists. Painting mostly in the style of his father, James Francis ‘excell[ed] in sunset effects, and was particularly successful in his coast scenes,’ as per Strickland. His coastal scenes are largely inspired by travels to France, Italy and Switzerland.
