‘Ross Castle at Killarney in Ireland’

Born in Cremona – where a street is named after him – Agostino Aglio spent his career in England where he settled in 1803 but he also worked in Ireland, France and Germany. He was an accomplished scene painter, decorator, lithographer and landscape painter and the influence of John Constable has been detected in some of his watercolours. His varied projects included a volume on Mexican Antiquities, a portrait of Queen Victoria and a colossal mural of the Crucifixion, measuring 55ft x 630ft for the Catholic Church at Moorfields in London.79 ‘Ballymote Church or Abbey Co. Sligo’ Watercolour on laid paper, 13.5 x 18.5 Bigari was from Bologna, Italy, and came to Ireland where he worked as a scene-painter of the Smock Alley Theatre. In 1777 from his address in South King Street he exhibited six works at the Society of Artists in William Street. Later he toured with Gabriel Beranger recording ancient buildings and antiquites. Many of his watercolours and drawings were engraved for Grose’s antiquities including the work exhibited here.
